Hopkins Forest Users Committee

Charge

The Hopkins Memorial Forest (HMF), a 2,600 acre (1,040 ha) reserve located in Massachusetts, New York, and Vermont, is a unique research and educational resource for an undergraduate institution. The mission of the HMF is to facilitate research and undergraduate teaching activities while preserving and monitoring forest resources, particularly through long-term ecological research. In addition, low-impact recreational activities that foster understanding and enjoyment of the forest environment and are compatible with teaching and research programs are welcomed. The HMF is managed by the HMF Manager in collaboration with the HMF Users Committee and the Zilkha Center for the Environment (ZCE).

The HMF Users Committee makes decisions related to the execution and application of HMF policies, including research, education, recreation, and forest management. The HMF Users Committee consists of up to 13 members including the faculty chair and up to five additional faculty members with active teaching or research interests in the HMF. In addition, the following are ex officio members of the committee: the HMF Manager, the Lab Supervisor of the Environmental Analysis Laboratory, a representative from the Center for Learning in Action (CLiA) selected by the Director of CLiA, the Director of the Williams Outing Club, the Deputy Director of Co-Curricular Programs and Community Engagement of the ZCE (as a non-voting member), the Executive Director of the ZCE, and if possible, a staff member with expertise in data management.
